How do I bring a GPX route into SK Maps for offline use?

Somebody sent you a GPX and you want to ride it where there’s no signal. Getting it in takes a minute, and importing is free.

Steps

  1. Get the file onto the phone. AirDrop it, save it to Files, or tap it in Messages. Any GPX works: one a friend sent, one from a published route, or one you exported from another app.
  2. Open it into SK Maps. Open the file and choose SK Maps. The import sheet lists the routes and waypoints coming in, each route with its miles, before anything is saved.
  3. Pick where it goes, and save. Put it in a trip to keep the ride organized: choose New trip (it takes the file’s name) or add it to a trip you already have. The route, its waypoints and the rides you record on it then stay together. Or save it to your library on its own. Bring in the same file again and anything already there is skipped; saving it into a new trip asks you first.
  4. Ride it as it came, or make a route of it. A line somebody handed you comes in as a track. Follow it as it is: the app doesn’t re-plan it or move it onto another road. You can export it, reverse it, or change a stretch of it. Want options or fuel range on it? Open the track and tap Create route from this track. You get a route of the exact same line, and the original stays as it came in.
  5. Make sure the map is there offline. Download the state the route runs through before you leave signal (see preparing the phone). On the ride, the screen shows the miles to go and the climb ahead, and the phone buzzes if you leave the line, even when it’s locked.

Is importing free?

Yes. Import and export are never paywalled, even after a plan ends. Your own rides and routes go back out as GPX to any app.

Other file types

GPX is the one most riders get. The other formats SK Maps reads, and how a whole library from another app comes over, are in the import guide.
